The Outcomes of Bagua: The Peruvian Amazon One Year on from the Violence

    Monday 28 June 2010

    5:00 - 6.30pm

    Palace of Westminster, London

Chair: Lord Avebury - President of the Peru Support Group
Speakers will include the Peru Support Group, Amnesty International and CARE Peru.

On 5 June 2009, Peru witnessed probably the worse loss of life since the end of the country’s internal armed conflict in 2000, following protests by indigenous groups against a series of legislative decrees, collectively known as the 'Law of the Jungle' (Ley de la Selva). These were approved by President Alan García in 2008 to make Peruvian law conform to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States.

    WORKSHOPS:
Graham Gordon, formerly head of human rights organisation Peace and Hope’s (Paz y Esperanza) Advocacy and Communications Team in Peru, will focus on the Putis massacre, an emblematic case from Peru’s internal armed conflict that relates to the recommendations of Peru’s Truth & Reconciliation Commission and highlights the issue of access to justice
James Haselip, a lecturer in Sustainable Development at the University of Reading will consider the risk of conflict and the 'politics of grievance' surrounding industry development (extractives), with illustrations linked to oil and gas

  • Human Rights

    human rights

Following nearly 15 years of internal war, violations of human rights continue. But in recent years, there have been a number of advances in the area of human rights. However, many innocent people remain in prison and the use of torture is common.

  • Women

As well as over half the population living in poverty, chronic malnutrition is widespread. Inadequate and unequally distributed health services mean that the most vulnerable sectors of the society, women and children are worst affected.
