Peru: The 2006 Elections
Parties, Participation and the Human Rights Agenda

This report highlights the connection between democracy and human rights, and challenges the policies of those who seek public office. Few issues are so fundamental for human welfare as full respect for human rights. It is therefore a particularly timely moment to ask parties and other actors what they have to say about human rights abuse past, present and future. This is what this brief publication seeks to do.

Peru: Democracy at the Crossroads

Following the UK Parliamentary Ad Hoc delegation to Peru on 19 - 26 July 2000, organised by the Peru Support Group, a report of the visit, 'Peru: Democracy at the Crossroads', is now available.

The report focuses on the two rounds of elections in April and May which gave President Alberto Fujimori an unprecedented third term in office. It makes recommendations about what would need to be done before free and fair elections can be held. In particular it highlights the problems of the lack of freedom of expression, the absence of the rule of law, the violation of human rights and the political ends to which food aid donated by the EU and other sources, was manipulated by the Fujimori government to further his presidential campaign in the lead up to the elections.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS

Testimonies of Courage and Pain
The photographic exhibition "Testimonies of courage and pain" is an exhibition originally commissioned by the Project Counselling Service in Peru. It is made up of 10 boards depicting women affected by the political violence in Peru (1980-2000), with a short testimony of their experiences, and two boards with text giving information about the Truth commission in Peru, and the political context in Peru.

This exhibition highlights the role that women played during the years of political violence and the need for them to be included now in this transition to democracy.

The Peru Support Group has been given permission to reproduce the exhibition in the UK in order to help raise awareness of these issues internationally.
The photographer, Nelly Plaza is a recognised Peruvian anthropologist and photographer. She studied at anthropology at La Catolica University in Peru and photography at the Instituto Superior Technologico Antonio Gaudi. Currently a freelance photographer, Nelly worked for a number of years in the Centre for Education and Communication in Illa, on projects promoting local culture in rural areas.
